JaBOWS<\/strong> — Just a Bunch of Web Services. That’s a term that ZDNet blogger Joe McKendrick has used to describe what many companies have implemented.
\nWeb Services often are used as basic building blocks in creating SOA implementations, but Web Services alone do not equate to SOA. Most IT organizations have not invested the time and resources to create robust SOA infrastructures. More and more companies are deploying web services as part of a few application deployments, but they’re doing so without building an architecture
\nfor their organization.<\/p>\n

An Aberdeen<\/a> report from last summer found that organizations that invest the time and energy to fully plan and layout SOA are seeing a 90 percent improvement in their user statisfaction. That compares to just 15 percent who’ve had improvements by deploying a mix of web services. Organizations that fit Aberdeen’s defintion of “best in class” SOA implementations have deployed both middleware and registry\/repostories. 100 percent of these best-in-class SOA organzations report that their development costs have been reduced and 72 percent of the organizations reported
\nreduced costs.<\/p>\n

Jason Bloomberg of ZapThink<\/a> said:<\/p>\n

“The fact of the matter is, many organizations who purchase so-called SOA middleware are not implementing SOA at all, but rather are using that middleware for traditional integration with the addition of Web services capabilities. In fact, the organizations that are the most successful with SOA
\nare the ones that aren’t allowing the middleware vendors to drive their initiatives.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

But is this just the SOA purist vision? It’s not very realistic to think that companies will turn enterprise-wide SOA on big-bang overnight. Companies need to start somewhere, and departmental solutions look like a good place to get your feet wet. Adopting SOA is a paradigm change and it can only be expected that companies will need to grow the technology by investing first in targeted pilot projects. Done wisely, the pilot “SOA” projects can coalesce. But without a plan, web services are just another kind of integration tool — just a bunch of web services.<\/p>\n
