Where are technologies like virtualization, containerization, and software-defined enterprises taking us? \u00a0Hyperconvergence is a term some are beginning to use to describe an architecture for IT infrastructure that builds on a set of nodes that work together to manage\u00a0computing and storage resources. \u00a0The nodes can be scaled up or down as needed.<\/p>\n

Standard IT infrastructure consists of components, each with a pre-defined purpose, that act as building blocks for the system. \u00a0In the standard architecture, computation\u00a0and storage nodes\u00a0act separately. \u00a0Virtualization is typically applied to the individual nodes to improve overall flexibility.<\/p>\n

In a hyperconverged infrastructure, the line between computation and storage blurs: all nodes in the system are software defined. \u00a0Some vendors that are selling hyperconverged solutions include SimpliVity<\/a>, Nutanix<\/a>, EMC <\/a>and Dell<\/a>.<\/p>\n

IDC says that the HCIS market<\/a> is growing at 116 percent<\/a> annually and will reach $800 million by the end of the year. \u00a0Next year should see continued growth on the order of 94 percent, reaching $1.5 billion globally.<\/p>\n

In a Gartner report<\/a>, Mike Cisek<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Jeffrey Hewitt<\/a>, advise business<\/a> that are\u00a0“highly virtualized midsize enterprises with fewer than 200 virtual machines should absolutely opt for hyperconverged infrastructure.”<\/p>\n
