When it comes to data storage, most companies would prefer to keep\u00a0their data\u00a0on-premise under lock and key. \u00a0A report by CTERA Networks, the\u00a02015 Enterprise Cloud Storage Survey<\/a>\u00a0found that nearly three quarters of enterprises prefer to store their data with a private cloud.<\/p>\n

Rani Osnat<\/a>, VP of Strategic Marketing at CTERA, said that<\/a> “cloud storage is simplifying and accelerating data services across the enterprise. However, an increasing number of data leakage events, and a desire to exercise more control over file sharing and data protection are forcing organizations to investigate and deploy alternatives to public cloud storage services… Organizations are leveraging cloud storage for efficiency gains and cost savings, while combatting security, control and governance requirements with virtual-private or fully-private topologies.”<\/p>\n

The report suggests that\u00a0cloud storage gateways (CSGs)<\/em> could help solve the problem.<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0A cloud storage gateway<\/a> is an appliance located on-premise that links data between applications running on-premise and remote cloud-based storage.<\/p>\n

One third of enterprises are implementing CSGs are a way of responding to employee use of file, sync and share (FSS) services. \u00a0A\u00a0CSG lets these businesses\u00a0set up easy access for employees to large amounts data storage while controlling costs and minimizing IT overhead.<\/p>\n

FSS products like Box and Dropbox have lured many departments and individuals in companies because the products are easy to use and reasonably prices. \u00a0But many organizations worry about the security of these public consumer products. \u00a0Osnat commented about FSS that<\/a> “what you need to do is wrap enough security around it for that company to feel at least as comfortable with that concept as they do with storing it in-house…\u00a0It\u2019s a very touchy issue with enterprises. \u00a0Some of them will use these services on a departmental level, or some level with strict controls over what type of data can be shared with these services, but at the same time we know they all wish they had something better.”<\/p>\n
