WiFi Aware<\/a> is a new technology that lets nearby devices connect and communicate even when standard WiFi, internet or cellular connections aren’t available. \u00a0The technology was released by the WiFi Alliance. \u00a0Connections will be possible between devices up to 30-45 meter.<\/p>\n

Rolf de Vegt<\/a>, a senior director at Qualcomm, a member of the Wi-Fi Alliance, said that<\/a> “proximity-based discovery based on geolocation and cloud-based matching is used in a number of applications in the market today, but this approach requires continuous Internet connectivity, and cloud support. \u00a0Although there are other technologies for direct device-to-device, proximity-based discovery already in the marketplace or under development in standards bodies, Wi-Fi is very well suited to take this capability to the mainstream.”<\/p>\n

Examples of WiFi apps might include sharing photos among members of a group travelling together, playing a game with someone riding on the same train, automatic turning on your lights when returning home, or receiving push notifications from exhibits when in a museum.<\/p>\n

Clint Brown<\/a>, a business development director at Broadcom, said that<\/a> “Wi-Fi Aware closes many of the gaps preventing other technologies from offering a rich experience where users can fully engage with the world around them. \u00a0Its ability to work well indoors and in dense environments, and to facilitate an efficient device-to-device or traditional Wi-Fi connection, will make Wi-Fi Aware well suited for a variety of applications and environments.”<\/p>\n
