Security and privacy issues of Internet of Things (IoT) technology is coming under review.<\/p>\n

This was brought into focus recently by the recent\u00a0House Judiciary Committee hearing on IoT<\/a>. \u00a0During that session,\u00a0Chairman Bob Goodlatte<\/a> (R-VA) said that<\/a> “in particular, we need to examine the privacy and security implications of this technology, and look into the security and privacy measures that the industry is building now and the measures they intend to implement as open standards are developed.”<\/p>\n

Sergio Galindo<\/a>, general manager, GFI Software, told TechRadar\u00a0<\/a>that “everything with an IP address is a potential target, and by deploying a variety of IoT devices in the workplace, you’ve increased the number of targets for cybercriminals considerably…\u00a0\u00a0Malware attacks will grow as particular devices grow in popularity since malware writers usually won’t waste their time on niche devices if they want mass chaos and reach. \u00a0Hijacking of IoT systems is a growing problem, usually as a result of weak passwords and vulnerable Wi-Fi connections.”<\/p>\n

Amol Sarwate<\/a>, Director of Engineering at Qualys, said that<\/a> “each device should be secure by default \u2013 it should only perform specific tasks and stop unauthorised activities from being carried out. \u00a0Unfortunately, many developers don’t have this mind-set in place from the start.”<\/p>\n
