In the freemium model, a base product or service is given away for free, but proprietary features, functionality or virtual goods are available only for a fee. \u00a0The term Freemium <\/em><\/a>was coined by Jarid Lukin<\/a> in 2006. \u00a0The freemium model has led to the success of a number of businesses, like Spotify <\/a>and Dropbox<\/a>. \u00a0Even parts of Microsoft Windows 10<\/a>\u00a0have adopted the\u00a0freemium model.<\/p>\n

But while some businesses have had success in using Freemium to accelerate their launches, freemium isn’t usually enough\u00a0to keep their businesses revved up for long term. \u00a0Freemium often works well for consumer applications, but not as well for business-focused apps. \u00a0The idea is that once businesses are hooked on software that they were able to get started with for free that they’ll see value and buy\u00a0premium features that will extend the usefulness of the application.<\/p>\n

Jason Lemkin<\/a>, Managing Director at Storm Ventures,\u00a0told BusinessInsider<\/a>\u00a0that “We\u2019d all love to do freemium because we don\u2019t have to hire salespeople. \u00a0But what we all kind of figured out is there just aren\u2019t enough businesses in the entire world to get to a $100 million business at freemium… \u00a0The pendulum has definitely swung back away from freemium to enterprise. \u00a0Most of the B2B IPOs that have been successful, like Salesforce and Workday, are all enterprise-y. They\u2019re not freemium.”<\/p>\n

Sean Ellis<\/a>, Chief Executive Office of Qualaroo, told BusinessInsider<\/a> that “We learned from the freemium experience that making a completely free product didn\u2019t accelerate adoption very much. \u00a0So we just gradually increased the prices, and each time we did, we did not see a slow down in demand. \u00a0I think companies saw a lot of failures from those who tried to do freemium. \u00a0Ultimately, it has to be implemented in the right situation.”<\/p>\n
