There have been more than 650 sightings of unauthorized unmanned drones<\/a> flying near aircraft so far in 2015\u00a0that have been reported to the FAA. \u00a0The number of incidents has nearly tripled since 2014. \u00a0Drones have interfered not only with aircraft but have also hampered\u00a0firefighters battling wildfire blazes<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In order to introduce more accountability, UC Berkeley researchers are investigating<\/a> a way to more easily identify the owner of drones so that operators can be made more accountable.<\/p>\n

The project is called Lightcense<\/a>. \u00a0The idea is to attach an array of LED lights on the underside of the drone that would flash a unique pattern of lights as it flies. \u00a0The light pattern would be a unique identifier for the craft, similar to a license plate. \u00a0Observers could visually see the color sequence and record it or could capture the code with a device like a camera or smartphone. \u00a0A law enforcement agency would be able to look up the pattern in a database to identify the owner.<\/p>\n
