Four years ago at the O’Reilly Media Web 2.0 Conference the term ‘Web 2.0’ was born. The term refers to the collaborative nature of newer web-based technologies, and includes things like social networking, RSS, wikis, blogs and folksonomies.<\/p>\n

2007 saw strong interest and growth in all things Web 2.0. While many weary of the moniker are talking of Web 3.0, Web 2.0 is still on a pathway towards full acceptance. Forrester Research predicts<\/a> that 2008 will be a year where Web 2.0 will find stronger adoption in enterprises. They predict the tech winners in the field to be mid-tier vendors, System Integrators, consultancies and Microsoft. Web 2.0 technologies are maturing and offer real value to companies, promoting better information sharing and collaboration across the organization.<\/p>\n

Forrester is predicting that 42% of companies that did not have Web 2.0 on their priority list at the start of the year will add it to their list before the end of 2008. The prediction comes because pilot Web 2.0 projects initiated in 2007 are now beginning to demonstrate successes. End users accustomed to Web 2.0 consumer tools are also expected to demand similar capabilities from their enterprise tools. But cross-enterprise Web 2.0 is still a ways past 2008; expect Web 2.0 to be adopted this year primarily at the departmental and group levels within the organizations.<\/p>\n

Web 2.0 candidates most ripe for acceptance in the enterprise include RSS, social networking and mashup technology.<\/p>\n
