Last year the US Federal government spent nearly $2 billion on cloud computing\u00a0according to IDC<\/a>. \u00a0The Federal government is attempting to implement\u00a0a CloudFirst <\/a>policy which it says<\/a>\u00a0that “our responsibility in government is to achieve the significant cost, agility and innovation benefits of\u00a0cloud computing as quickly as possible. ”<\/p>\n

But there are conflicting reports out now about how well the government is really doing in its move to the cloud.<\/p>\n

On the one hand, a report from Microsoft and Forbes found the government is making good progress in adopting cloud technologies. \u00a0Bruce Rogers<\/a>, Chief Insights Officer at Forbes Media, said that<\/a> “government agencies are achieving remarkable results in the cloud. \u00a0Leaders like the City of Miami, the State of Alabama and the Department of Defense are demonstrating that the cloud can deliver vast improvements in the quality of government.”<\/p>\n

That’s one view. \u00a0On the other hand, a\u00a0report\u00a0by Dell and Dimensional Research<\/a> said that about 80 percent of government agencies say that their concern about insecurity of cloud computing will\u00a0be a roadblock that prevents\u00a0them from moving to the cloud. \u00a0This thinking comes in the wake of an increasing number of security breaches. \u00a0In June, for example, the Office of Personnel Management <\/a>(OPM) reported a breach exposed information on 4.2 million employees.<\/p>\n

In order to continue progress with the CloudFirst policy the government will need\u00a0to come up with a workable strategy for handling\u00a0security.<\/p>\n
