Starting last week the NFL will be attaching\u00a0tracking sensors to players to gather a huge wealth of sports data. \u00a0The sensors will be embedded into the shoulder pad of each football player and will be continuously wiring data back to 20 different receivers that have been set up in 18 of the 31\u00a0NFL stadiums. \u00a0The sensors used will be\u00a0Zebra Technology radio frequency identification (RFID) tags<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The data collected will include information on how fast a\u00a0player is running, player\u00a0positions, and the distance that\u00a0a player has traveled. \u00a0Football fans will be able to track the information via the\u00a0downloadable NFL 2015 app for Xbox One and Windows 10<\/a>. \u00a0Coaches and players will be able to monitor how the game is going and use the data as a tool for post-game \u00a0analysis. \u00a0The data will also be sent to broadcasters and used for display on screens in the stadium during the game.<\/p>\n

Matt Swensson<\/a>, senior director of Emerging Products and Technology at the NFL, said that<\/a> “we\u2019ve always had these traditional NFL stats. \u00a0The league has been very interested in trying to broaden that and bring new statistics to the fans. Along the way, there\u2019s been more realization about how the data can be leveraged to make workflow more efficient around the game. \u00a0This type of initiative really opens the doors to do more things at the venue. \u00a0At the Pro Bowl last year, we had a display up that showed what players were on the field. By putting up what players were on the field in real time, it really gave fans more information.”<\/p>\n

Jill Stelfox<\/a>, vice president at Zebra Technology, said that <\/a>“the possibilities are truly endless. \u00a0The players love this kind of tracking technology because of that. They\u2019re professional athletes by every stretch of the imagination. They want more data about themselves \u2014 how they can stay hydrated better, perform better. Anything that can help them do that, they really want.”<\/p>\n
