Forrester nicknamed the scenarios after poker hands.

The Three Kings. In this scenario, three major Enterprise Software companies dominate the landscape: Oracle, IBM and one other. Enterprise software is constructed Lego-style by fitting together components from huge offerings of interlocking software elements. Competition is tough against the three kings because their offerings are fully interoperable, reliable, feature complete, and secure. But with fewer competitors, software costs are high and innovation lags.

A Full House. This is a sort of best-of-breed scenario where Business managers drive the software agenda, leaving the IT team to determine integration details. Vendors from all spaces: telecommunications, media, and collaborative software take on the Enterprise. Competition becomes fierce. Innovation flourishes and a large number of options become available.

Joker’s Wild. This scenario plays out if SaaS becomes more dominant and better accepted in the Enterprise. At least one new vendor, most likely coming at software as a utility, becomes huge and challenges the other majors. Similar to A Full House, competition is tough, prices remain competitive, and innovation is required.

Interesting scenarios. Also interesting that Open Source doesn’t play a part in any of them.
The popularity of SOA and easily interoperable services makes ‘A Full House’ a likely future scenario.

<a class="lightsocial_a"
