Enterprise 2.0, the business version of Web 2.0, is set to grow to $4.3 billion by 2013 reports<\/a> Forrester Research<\/a>. The technologies within the relatively new sector are social networking\/collaboration tools, RSS and mashups.<\/p>\n

In 2008, companies with 1000 or more employees will spend $764 million on Web 2.0 tools and technologies, and expenditures are expected to increase at a rate of 43 percent per year oiver each of the next five years.<\/p>\n

Enterprise 2.0 tools help organizations capture tacit knowledge in the form of unstructured data, using tools like blogs, wikis and on-line communities.<\/p>\n

About a third of the Enterprise 2.0 money being spent now by companies is going toward social networking; applications like Awareness, Communispace and Jive Software.<\/p>\n

Enterprises have been slow to adopt new internet technologies like Web 2.0. Part of the slowness has to do with limited IT budgets and worry about security, scalability and data compromise using technologies that are relatively new. There is often a lack of trust in the IT department of these tools.<\/p>\n

Many companies have large investments in legacy software. The new technologies are competing head on with the older software and an easy path of integration between the old and the new is usually non-existent. Swapping from one technology to another is both risky and expensive.<\/p>\n

Despite the hesitancy, expect Web 2.0 and Enterprise 2.0 to continue to grow and become more sophisticated. Existing vendors are incorporating Web 2.0 options in newer releases of their software. Web 2.0 will eventually become widespread to the point that it will begin to be considered more as a feature, rather than as a separate technology.<\/p>\n
