{"id":5848,"date":"2015-11-23T07:00:06","date_gmt":"2015-11-23T15:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/?p=5848"},"modified":"2015-10-12T07:50:08","modified_gmt":"2015-10-12T15:50:08","slug":"big-data-gartner-half-of-ethics-violations-will-be-from-improper-use-of-analytics-by-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/big-data-gartner-half-of-ethics-violations-will-be-from-improper-use-of-analytics-by-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"Big Data: Gartner: Half of Ethics Violations Will be From Improper use of Analytics by 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Algorithmic-based decision making is increasingly being deployed, but at least at this point in time, the decision to roll out and rely primarily on data analytic results may not be the right one. \u00a0A second point is that improper interpretation of statistics and analytics can lead to problems.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvic.ca\/socialsciences\/politicalscience\/people\/directory\/bennettcolin.php\" target=\"_blank\">Colin Bennett<\/a>, professor at the University of Victoria, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.computerworld.co.nz\/article\/586457\/big-data-perils-improper-use-analytics\/\" target=\"_blank\">said that<\/a> &#8220;Big Data doesn\u2019t replace human judgment. \u00a0We need that judgment to determine how we should act on any trends or associations that we find in the data.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Gartner estimates that by 2018 nearly half of all ethics violations will be a result of improperly using and interpretting the results from big data and associated data analytics.<\/p>\n<p>Gartner advises that technologies like big data and data analytics be\u00a0used in conjunction with standard human judgement.<\/p>\n<p>They recommend that the following five best practices\u00a0for data analytics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Linking Analytics to Business Outcomes Through Benefits Mapping<br \/>\nAnalytic tests should be constructed based on the business question under consideration.<br \/>\nAnalytics that aren&#8217;t devised up-front to address a specific question or problem will produce results that aren&#8217;t relevant or distracting to the business goals.<\/li>\n<li>Investing in Advanced Analytics With Caution<br \/>\nAdvanced analytics is appropriate for solving very complex problems.<br \/>\nBut just because the business may be generating more data than before, simple analytics can still be as usefully applied to large data sets as it was earlier applied to smaller ones.<\/li>\n<li>Balancing Analytic Insight With the Ability of the Organization to Make Use of the Analysis<br \/>\nGartner recommends limiting the investment in analytics to the ability and skills available in the organization for constructing and interpretting analytic testing.<\/li>\n<li>Prioritizing Incremental Improvements Over Business Transformation<br \/>\nMost organizations can best take advantage of and successfully use data analytics by incrementally adding analytics capabilities and complexity.<\/li>\n<li>Considering Alternative Approaches to Reaching the Same Goal<br \/>\nDon&#8217;t rely on a single method for making decisions. \u00a0Statistical modelling, data mining, machine learning algorithms, as well as human judgement all have their place in the decision making process.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gartner.com\/analyst\/12496\/Alexander-Linden\" target=\"_blank\">Alexander Linden<\/a>, research director at Gartner, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gartner.com\/newsroom\/id\/3144217\" target=\"_blank\">said that <\/a>&#8220;although big data and advanced analytics projects risk many of the same pitfalls as traditional projects, in most cases, these risks are accentuated due to the volume and variety of data, or the sophistication of advanced analytics capabilities. \u00a0Most pitfalls will not result in an obvious technical or analytic failure. Rather they will result in a failure to deliver business value.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"lightsocial_container\"><div class=\"lightsocial_element\"><a class=\"lightsocial_a\" href=\"http:\/\/digg.com\/submit?url=https%3A%2F%2Fformtek.com%2Fblog%2Fbig-data-gartner-half-of-ethics-violations-will-be-from-improper-use-of-analytics-by-2018%2F&amp;title=\" target=\"_blank\"><img
