Dell, EMC, HP and IBM, as well as Sun are players in the storage market. Now Sun says that the proprietary approach is wrong and Sun has now made available Open Source software that can turn raw hardware into a sophisticated storage solution.

Sun’s Open Source solution builds on Sun’s OpenSolaris and ZFS file system and targets Sun’s XFire 4500 server, although because it is open source, running it on other hardware is also possible. Using Sun’s developer guide, it is possible to build an enterprise-quality storage server or Network-Attached Storage device (NAS).

Sun is pushing Open Source Storage in a big way and has started a community of developers and projects around the technology. Today there are already 3000 registered developers and 30 projects that have started.

This is another example of how Open Source is gradually creeping across all types of software, and the high quality of software that Sun is offering up may force other storage vendors to carefully consider how best to compete,

<div
