“IoT is now relevant to all organisations. Whether IoT applications are deployed to help IT function, driven by lines of business or through devices introduced by end users, various practices will need adapting to accommodate the millions of things involved which will, over time, dwarf the number of traditional IT endpoints,”\u00a0said <\/a>\u00a0Bob Tarzey<\/a>, analyst and director at Quocirca.<\/p>\n

But how really will IoT be used? \u00a0It may be relevant, but many people are still scratching their heads about just how to use it. \u00a0People have\u00a0heard the hype of IoT but they can’t fully visualize the applications or realization of\u00a0IoT. \u00a0A recent whitepaper by IDG<\/a> and Intel tries to make that a little easier by collecting some interesting examples\u00a0of early IoT implementations.<\/p>\n

The examples include these five:<\/p>\n

Energy-efficient Smart Buildings<\/strong> – a master control system that connects to and controls devices in a building. \u00a0The project targets\u00a030 percent improvement in building energy efficiency.<\/p>\n

Factory Automation<\/strong> – factory floor data is\u00a0collected and processed with analytics software. \u00a0The project improves equipment uptime, increases yield and productivity, optimizes inventory and use of tooling and human resources.<\/p>\n

Remote-Control Agriculture<\/strong> – in Malaysian paddy fields real-time sensors are used to\u00a0report water levels and water flow into and out of the fields. \u00a0The system allows the users to monitor the status of the fields from a mobile application and to control the irrigation system. \u00a0The system has made farmers more efficient.<\/p>\n

Transportation Efficiencies<\/strong> – sensors embedded in vehicles collect data like\u00a0fuel usage, location, time and distance. \u00a0The system helps make vehicles more efficient, and lowers fuel and CO2 consumption.<\/p>\n

Retail Sales Kiosk<\/strong> – Coffee kiosks are equipped with high-definition touch-screens, cashless payment, telemetry, near-field communication and digital signage. \u00a0Data collected is anonymized and analyzed with analytics. \u00a0The vendor was able to optimize pricing, product mix by location, and both up and cross sell new product.<\/p>\n
