If you read the headlines you can get easily convinced that SAP is losing out to vendors like Oracle and Microsoft. There is some truth to that, but SAP is not standing still. In fact, it’s seeing very strong growth. And that growth is coming from the small and medium sized market.<\/p>\n

People don’t think small companies when they think SAP, and SAP is trying hard to shed its multi-million dollar image of a huge software and services vendor. SAP is seeing tremendous growth in the Small and Medium sized market. Especially outside of the US and Europe. There’s solid growth in countries like Brazil, China, India and Russia.<\/p>\n

Actually 75 percent of SAP’s customers are small and midsize, 35,688 in all, and the number of customers that signed up grew 28 percent
\nyear over year during the first quarter of 2008. The breakdown of the SAP software across those organization includes 150 SAP Business ByDesign, 11,700 SAP Business All-in-One, and 18,690 SAP Business One customers.<\/p>\n

The numbers are a bit staggering. SAP added 1570 new customers in the first quarter, or about 26 new customers per working day. What’s more interesting is how that growth is being generated. It’s not self generated — 85 percent of the signups are coming from partners. Partners typically add value to the solution with services, vertical, and very specialized micro-vertical expertise.<\/p>\n

Partnering is the SAP strategy for connecting with the small and medium sized market. It’s a strategy that Microsoft has known for some time.
\nAnd it’s one now that is working well for SAP.<\/p>\n
