Marc Andreessen<\/a> said\u00a0that<\/a> “software is eating the world”. \u00a0 Software is becoming\u00a0the controlling factor\u00a0for how almost everything works.<\/p>\n

In 2015 we saw the continued rise of software with the emergence of technologies\u00a0like the\u00a0Software-Defined Network<\/a> (SDN),\u00a0Software-Defined Storag<\/a>e (SDS), and the Software-defined Data Center<\/a> (SDDC). \u00a0Market research group Technavio expects<\/a> that the Software-Defined Everything (SDx) market will grow annually at a rate of 32 percent over the next five years.<\/p>\n

Software-Defined technologies are attractive because they\u00a0typically are cost savers. \u00a0They enable businesses to\u00a0run leaner and more innovatively. \u00a0Software can reduce the amount and level of sophistication of hardware needed, and it can also reduce the labor costs needed to oversee operations. \u00a0SDDCs, for example,<\/a> are being designed to use less hardware — things like servers, racks, disk and tape, routers and switches — automating many tasks that were labor intensive, and reducing costs like power consumption and cooling.<\/p>\n

Jim O’Reilly<\/a>, IT consultant, said that <\/a>“there’s a point at which legacy [infrastructure] can’t hold up against economics, and we’re very close to it and even past it in some ways. \u00a0[2016] could be the tipping point — SDS and SDN will push this question very hard.”<\/p>\n

Gartner\u00a0explains <\/a>the importance of SDx technology by saying that “to deal with the rapidly changing demands of digital business and scale systems up \u2014 or down \u2014 rapidly, computing has to move away from static to dynamic models.” \u00a0The dynamic characteristics of software provide greater flexibility with system modeling and reconfiguration.<\/p>\n

Software is becoming<\/a> the center for communication and interactions and will provide the foundation on which companies build and\u00a0run their businesses.<\/p>\n
