{"id":6073,"date":"2016-02-17T07:00:31","date_gmt":"2016-02-17T15:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/?p=6073"},"modified":"2016-01-13T09:46:12","modified_gmt":"2016-01-13T17:46:12","slug":"collaboration-ihmc-intelligent-collaboration-between-man-and-machine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/collaboration-ihmc-intelligent-collaboration-between-man-and-machine\/","title":{"rendered":"Collaboration (IHMC): Intelligent Collaboration Between Man and Machine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Machines can outclass humans in a number of areas, particularly in performing fast computations, but even today&#8217;s state-of-the-art computers don&#8217;t really think and aren&#8217;t that much help when it comes to generating new ideas. \u00a0But what happens when human ingenuity is paired with artificial intelligence and machine computations? \u00a0Scientists are\u00a0finding that if they\u00a0closely align machines and humans to\u00a0work together, it is possible to solve very complex problems.<\/p>\n<p>The goals of this approach,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/trainingmag.com\/human-machine-collaboration\" target=\"_blank\">Intelligent Human-Machine Collaboration<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ihmc.us\/groups\/jbradshaw\/\" target=\"_blank\">IHMC<\/a>), include the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Divide work into those tasks that are best done by machines and those best performed by humans<\/li>\n<li>Machines take on the role of partner rather than tool<\/li>\n<li>Human abilities are extended and amplified by technology to know, perceive and collaborate<\/li>\n<li>Humans and machines can work synergistically together to be able to solve complex problems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/motherboard.vice.com\/read\/human-computation-could-save-the-world-without-the-risks-of-ai\" target=\"_blank\">One example of how human-machines can work together<\/a> is within a simulation environment. \u00a0Scientists create environments that humans can interactively use to simulate new processes. \u00a0For example, an engineer could define a new engine within the simulation environment and which can pass off to the computer a design that can be used to run\u00a0through various simulations. From that, it is possible to determine how the engine functions under different fuel combinations and usage scenarios.<\/p>\n<p>Another example is an <a href=\"https:\/\/trainingmag.com\/human-machine-collaboration\" target=\"_blank\">experiment run in 2011<\/a> where human users used a application that was used like a game that let them manipulate a simulation of the folding the molecular structure of a virus. \u00a0Using the game and assisted machine simulation, scientists were able to identify the correct virus crystal structure for a virus that causes AIDs in monkeys. \u00a0It took just ten days &#8212; scientists hadn&#8217;t been able to solve the problem for the previous fifteen years.<\/p>\n<div class=\"lightsocial_container\"><div class=\"lightsocial_element\"><a class=\"lightsocial_a\" href=\"http:\/\/digg.com\/submit?url=https%3A%2F%2Fformtek.com%2Fblog%2Fcollaboration-ihmc-intelligent-collaboration-between-man-and-machine%2F&amp;title=\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lightsocial_img\" src=\"https:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/wp-content\/plugins\/light-social\/digg.png\" alt=\"Digg This\" title=\"Digg This\" \/><\/a><\/div><div class=\"lightsocial_element\"><a
