The Internet of Things (IoT) is expected to connect up to 50 billion devices to the internet by 2020<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0spending on the technology topping $235 billion this year. \u00a0Andrew Begin<\/a>, senior strategist at Mirum Global,\u00a0said\u00a0that<\/a>\u00a0IoT has “caught fire in a big way.”<\/p>\n

But Andrew Tarantola<\/a>, associate editor at Engadget, said that\u00a0<\/a>\u201cIoT remains mired in smart light bulbs, net-connected cameras and wireless speakers,\u00a0the same sorts of bland, iterative use cases we\u2019ve been seeing since the term was first coined.”<\/p>\n

Part of the problem is the lack of universally adopted standards. \u00a0Depending on what piece of IoT you look at, either there are no standards governing it, or standards have been drafted and proclaimed but not widely adopted.<\/p>\n

Andy Rhodes<\/a>, executive director for commercial IoT solutions at Dell, said that<\/a> “standards bodies have a lot more to do over the next couple of years in driving those standards and ensuring that more and more of the ecosystem players adopt the right standards so it is easy for customers to connect all of this stuff. It is still the wild west.”<\/p>\n

An early 2016 report by Forrester found that IoT \u201cstandards are nascent, as vendors are only a couple of years into the process of creating general-purpose interoperability standards. And IoT security technologies are still in the Creation phase, with no established products.”<\/p>\n
