Last month the Obama administration announced what they called The Opportunity Project<\/a>, a plan to grow the collaboration between the public and private sectors. \u00a0The website for the project self-describes\u00a0itself\u00a0as being “about all of us working together to increase opportunity by harnessing the power of data.”<\/p>\n

The White House has collaborated with a number of federal agencies and cities to collect and release new data sets of public data. \u00a0The project says that “this data can now be used by technologists, community groups, and local governments in order to help families find affordable housing, help businesses identify services they need, and help policymakers see inequities in their communities and make investments to expand fair housing and increase economic mobility.”<\/p>\n

The following eight cities are\u00a0already\u00a0participating in the project:<\/p>\n

  2. Detroit, Michigan<\/li>\n
  3. Kansas City, Missouri<\/li>\n
  4. New Orleans, Louisiana<\/li>\n
  5. New York, New York<\/li>\n
  6. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania<\/li>\n
  7. San Francisco, California<\/li>\n
  8. Washington, D.C.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Private companies that are involved in the project include\u00a0Redfin, Zillow, GreatSchools, PolicyLink, and Streetwyze.<\/p>\n
