It has been five years since\u00a0federal CIO Vivek Kundra <\/a>established a\u00a0“cloud-first” strategy<\/a> for government computing. \u00a0Initial progress was slow, but in 2015 some positive results<\/a> from the effort began\u00a0appearing. \u00a0Kundra’s original plan was to slash IT spending by reducing dependence on-premise data centers\u00a0and save $7.2 billion.<\/p>\n

When Kundra first announced his plan in 2010 there were 10,584 data centers<\/a>. \u00a0Over the following five years, 3125 of those centers have been shut down. \u00a0The closures were made primarily by the following federal agencies: Department of Agriculture, Defense, Interior, and Treasury. \u00a0Another 2000+ closures are expected to be made over the next four years. Although some agencies like the Department of Defense have been slow to move anything to the cloud, primarily because of security concerns.<\/p>\n

Today, public\u00a0websites<\/a> for DOJ, DHS, NIH, NIST, the Department of the Treasury and the Department of Transportation use\u00a0Drupal\u00a0running on the govCMS p<\/a>latform.<\/p>\n

Teresa Carlson<\/a>, vice president of worldwide public sector at Amazon Web Services, said that<\/a> “this has ushered in a new era of government IT characterized by an unprecedented ability to scale, continuous deployment, agile development and standardized, effective security practices.”<\/p>\n
