Improved robotic technology and decreasing costs are making the use of robotics in the supply chain a very attractive option.<\/p>\n

A survey from Deloitte of\u00a0manufacturers found that just over half thought that robotics and automation would provide them future competitive advantage and would be disruptive for their industry. \u00a0That is up from 39 percent from last year. \u00a0About one-third of the respondents say that they’re already beginning to use robots today and that is expected to increase to nearly three-quarters of businesses over the next six to ten years.<\/p>\n

Robots are becoming more sophisticated. \u00a0Supply chain robots today are able to “see” packages, and based on type and size, make decisions for how to best\u00a0\u00a0pick up and move them. \u00a0Current generation robots are\u00a0significantly safer and are frequently deployed to work side by side humans.\u00a0A report on robotics and the supply chain by MHI<\/a> found that\u00a0\u201cin the past, safety barriers and sensors prohibited people from working too near the machines\u2014creating a time-consuming process if someone noticed, for example, that a package was upside-down.\u201d<\/p>\n

The MHI report said that “while the vast majority of forwarders agree technology is the future of freight, they see many types of technology as overhyped. \u00a0Warehouse robotics are the only innovation that a majority consider will have a profound impact on the industry.”<\/p>\n
