Our take is that\u00a0Document Management deployed as SaaS\u00a0is very viable.\u00a0 But interestingly, a McKinsey report from earlier this year says not so.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Last Friday’s Formtek\u00a0blog<\/a> was about ECM deployed as SaaS.\u00a0\u00a0Since then I came across\u00a0an\u00a0interesting\u00a0report<\/a> by McKinsey\/IDC that appeared in April at Software 2006<\/a> and follow-up\u00a0blog<\/a> discussions about McKinsey’s predictions about the future of SaaS.<\/p>\n

In particular, this chart from the report has generated a lot of comment:<\/p>\n

In the chart, there are nine areas of Application types that are predicted to have little SaaS adoption between now and 2008.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Of interest here is that Documents and Records Management is one of those application areas.\u00a0 We think that McKinsey\u00a0doesn’t seem to\u00a0have gotten it right here,\u00a0but it\u00a0may be a question of timing.\u00a0 The potential\u00a0for Document Management\u00a0deployed as SaaS\u00a0is huge, especially\u00a0in the\u00a0SME space.\u00a0 But the number of players in the Document Management\u00a0SaaS space is still very small and the available functionality via the services available today is still rudimentary.\u00a0 The segment seems poised to grow.\u00a0 Technology no longer\u00a0is a limiting factor.\u00a0<\/p>\n

One trend where Document Management\u00a0SaaS growth is emerging\u00a0is as an add-on module\u00a0within already established SaaS applications.\u00a0 For example, SugarCRM and Saleforce.com\u00a0both offer Document Management\u00a0add-ons to their base CRM products.\u00a0 Pure-play Document Management and Records Management\u00a0SaaS are likely to follow.<\/p>\n
