The newest release of Docker includes a built-in orchestration capability that lets containers self-discover other containers in an ad hoc way. \u00a0Orchestration of containers has been a complex task that required specialized system administration skills. \u00a0The new release builds into the core Docker engine Docker Swarm and Compose features which previously needed to be implemented outside of the Docker core engine.<\/p>\n

A survey from CloudFoundry<\/a> found that only 22 percent of IT shops were using containers, primarily because IT groups thought the technology was too complex to integrate into their environments. \u00a050 percent said that being able to manage an environment of many containers was a top challenge. \u00a0Docker has tried to address some of those concerns around management with this new release.<\/p>\n

David Messina<\/a>, Docker senior vice president,\u00a0told CRN<\/a> that\u00a0“we’re at the point where the key next step for containers is building multi-container applications that are deployed on multiple hosts. \u00a0The engine itself becomes effectively a decentralized building block to group together what we call a swarm, what other environments call clusters, to create scalable distributed deployments. \u00a0You have something so simple that it can run on a developer’s laptop or scale across a global enterprise.”<\/p>\n

The Docker 1.12 release contains the following Swarm capabilities:<\/p>\n
