Open Source continues to make an impact on both IT and software development.<\/p>\n

Open source innovation has led to the development of new markets over ten times during the last twenty years, said <\/a>David Senf<\/a>, vice president at IDC Canada. \u00a0The first major impact of Open Source was with the development of the Linux operating system. \u00a0Next was the influence of the Apache web server, and then open source databases like MySQL came on the scene. \u00a0After that, there has been a flood of open source software spanning many categories.<\/p>\n

Open source products include development tools<\/a>, web browsers, the Android operating system, Hadoop for big data, and tools like Jenkins, Chef and Puppet for devops. \u00a0Products like OpenStack are also taking on the cloud. \u00a0And, in fact, much of the cloud today runs on Linux. \u00a0Senf said that “open source is the platform that big data is built on. Without Hadoop and Spark, we wouldn\u2019t have big data.”<\/p>\n

The biggest new development areas in software all have strong foundations in open source software: cloud, big data, analytics, and mobile. \u00a0Open source continues to fuel new innovation and digital transformation.<\/p>\n

Mike Olson<\/a>,\u00a0Cloudera co-founder and chief strategy officer, said that<\/a> “there’s been a stunning and irreversible trend in enterprise infrastructure. If you’re operating a data center, you’re almost certainly using an open source operating system, database, middleware, and other plumbing. No dominant platform-level software infrastructure has emerged in the last ten years in closed-source, proprietary form.”<\/p>\n
