The Enterprise Search heat wave continues.\u00a0 Back in 2004, KMWorld declared<\/a> Enterprise Search hot.\u00a0 And now an\u00a0updated report<\/a> from Forrester last week says that the field is still scorching as we move into 2007.<\/p>\n

Forrester names the top three company leaders\u00a0in Enterprise Search to be FAST<\/a>, Autonomy<\/a> and Endeca<\/a>.\u00a0 Record second quarter 2006 profits and revenues for all three of them back up Forrester’s observation.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n
\u00a0\"FAST<\/a><\/td>\n\"Autonomy<\/a>\u00a0<\/td>\n\"Endeca<\/a>\u00a0<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n

FAST Search and Transfer announced<\/a> record revenues for 2Q 2006\u00a0of $38.5 Million and growth of 60%.\u00a0 Autonomy announced<\/a> record results\u00a0for Q2 2006 with profits up 351% to $27.9 Million.\u00a0 Endeca announced<\/a> record results for Q2 2006, achieving 116% year-over-year revenue growth.\u00a0 That does seem hot!<\/p>\n

Forrester sees these three companies as having the widest presence across the scope of all search solution areas.\u00a0 Of the three, Forrester sees Endeca as the underdog, praising Endeca’s technology as being the superior product, but\u00a0predicting that\u00a0Endeca will have a difficult time because of their very weak product strategy, weak services, few active users, and weak partnerships with systems integrators.\u00a0 (Although it\u00a0does seem a bit odd that\u00a0Endeca should rate so high by Forrester on current product quality and yet so low on future product strategy.)<\/p>\n

Forrester considers FAST to be the Enterprise Search leader, but sees a neck-and-neck race with Autonomy.\u00a0 In the Fall of 2005, Autonomy appeared<\/a> as the market leader in Gardner’s Information Access Technology Magic Quadrant, and that was just prior to Autonomy’s acquisition<\/a> of Verity.<\/p>\n

Other strong performers noted by Forrester include Google, IBM, Microsoft and Entopia.\u00a0 But these companies are not currently competing in the most sophisticated realms of search.\u00a0 They tend to provide basic corporate search\u00a0across medium and small-scale systems that don’t require fast high-volume processing.\u00a0 But the attack from these companies on the lower end, notably from Microsoft’s SharePoint 2007,\u00a0are expected to\u00a0lead to steep price declines in Search.<\/p>\n

As the volumes of unstructured data continue to grow exponentially, the importance of Search technology is clear.\u00a0 New Idea Engineering<\/a> has an interesting article<\/a> that describes how many of today’s search technologies don’t scale well in managing the predicted explosion of content growth.\u00a0 The challenge of providing high-quality relevant results will continue to keep search technology hot for some time.<\/p>\n
