The Internet of Things (IoT) market of sensors and on-line devices is growing fast. \u00a0One player in the IoT market that you might not expect is the Federal government. \u00a0According to a new report by analyst firm Govini<\/a>, the federal government spent nearly $9 billion on IoT technology in 2015, a 20 percent increase from the previous year. \u00a0Within the government, the agency which spends the most on IoT is the US Department of Defense (DoD).<\/p>\n

How is the government using IoT? \u00a0The DoD, for example, purchases large numbers of sensors used for threat detection and communications in Iraq and Afghanistan. \u00a0Sensors are being deployed in a way that deploys sensors to help save the lives of soldiers.\u00a0\u00a0Matt Hummer, director at Govini, said that “for the DOD and its mission, the opportunity cost is high.”<\/p>\n

IoT categories include\u00a0infrastructure, software and security and devices. \u00a0The biggest growth in federal spending is in the area of sensors and data collectors which saw a 55.9 percent\u00a0increase over the previous year. \u00a0The top three categories <\/a>of federal spending are software applications, endpoint defenses, and sensors and data collectors.<\/p>\n
