“Private Clouds” is a concept which some enterprises are beginning to investigate. The private cloud runs within the firewall and is under complete control of the enterprise, but it also has characteristics of being “on-demand” and ready to scale up or down based on the current needs. As opposed to a publicly shared cloud that lives on the internet, a private cloud can ensure data privacy.<\/p>\n

Private clouds can have many of the characteristics of public ones, like multisite replication, location-aware delivery and disaster recovery. And private clouds are under your complete control and hence can be customized and streamlined to best match your IT needs. Private clouds tend to offer lowest-common-denominator functionality to appeal to the broadest range of customer.<\/p>\n

George Crump of Storage Switzerland in an InformationWeek piece<\/a> estimates that in the long term for very large enterprises that private clouds can be more cost effective and better meet company requirements than public clouds. But the downside is that you own it and you need to support and maintain it. Growing and maintaining a cloud system is hard work. The fact that storage technology is reinventing itself at a rapid rate means that planning the evolution of the system, selecting the right technology, and integrating the components, can be a challenge. Many small to mid-size companies would be better off to stick with the public clouds.<\/p>\n

It is still the early wave of cloud technology. Many startups are gravitating towards the public clouds, but few more established companies have taken the plunge. And even fewer are experimenting with private clouds. HP is one company that is exploring the commercialization of the private cloud. At HP Labs they’re investigating a self-managing storage appliance that has petabyte capacity, something they’re calling the “scalable storage project”.<\/p>\n

InformationWeek points out<\/a> that cloud computing is an architecture, not a service.<\/p>\n
