Inner source. \u00a0It’s not something related to zen or meditation. \u00a0It’s a term coined by Tim O’Reilly that describes how enterprises are applying open source practices\u00a0to enterprise software development. Business development teams are becoming more collaborative, shipping early before software is feature complete, and working both internally and externally to do their job. \u00a0They’re acting more like startups and setting up smaller groups and incubators to try out new ideas.<\/p>\n

Jeremy King<\/a>, CTO of Wal-Mart Global eCommerce, said that<\/a> “the more we can do this internal open source, the more flexible we can be and the faster we can release code to customers.\u00a0We want you to consume OS because it\u2019s faster, cheaper and better but we want you to contribute because it\u2019s the right thing to do for the community.”.<\/p>\n

Brian Doll<\/a>, vice president of strategy at GitHub, said that<\/a> “the distinction between open source software and enterprise software is blurring.\u00a0Large companies are …\u00a0buying into that culture of faster release cycles, working together, and having people work across boundaries.”<\/p>\n

Camille Fournier<\/a>, chief technology officer at Rent the Runway, said that<\/a> “Open source methods, when you apply them well, force you to document and formalize your process which can be a very good thing.”<\/p>\n
