Product Lifecycle Management (PLM)<\/a> is the management of the entire lifecycle of a product from initial concept development through design, manufacture, service, maintenance, and ultimate disposal. \u00a0PLM is a very focused and dominated by a handful of large software vendors.<\/p>\n

PLM\u00a0“Mindshare Leaders”, ranked by annual revenues, were recently identified by CIMdata<\/a>. \u00a0PLM revenues include both software and services and cover capabilities like\u00a0CAD, simulation tools, PDM solutions, engineering databases and digital manufacturing. \u00a0The list of top PLM\u00a0vendors is as follows:<\/p>\n

  1. Dassault Syst\u00e8mes ($3.113 billion)<\/li>\n
  2. Siemens PLM ($2.31 billion)<\/li>\n
  3. Autodesk ($2.3 billion)<\/li>\n
  4. PTC ($1.27 billion)<\/li>\n
  5. SAP PLM ($1.122 billion)<\/li>\n
  6. Oracle PLM ($619 million)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Industries that spend the most on PLM include\u00a0automotive, transportation, fabrication & assembly, electronics and telecommunications, and aerospace and defense.<\/p>\n

    Like nearly every category of software, PLM is also transitioning to the cloud. \u00a0A report by RNMarketResearch<\/a> estimates that cloud-based PLM\u00a0will grow 16.8 percent annually over the 2016 to 2021 timeframe. \u00a0The initial businesses using cloud-based PLM are primarily small and medium sized businesses that are trying to improve their design and\u00a0resource utilization capabilities.<\/p>\n
