While some businesses are continually on the cusp of adopting ever newer technologies, there are many businesses at the opposite end of the curve. \u00a0Some government systems offer examples of systems that are still in operation but are decades past their prime.<\/p>\n

For example, the US nuclear weapons system<\/a> is running on a computer from the 1970’s\u00a0that uses 8-inch floppy disks. \u00a0The system is used to send and receive messages related to nuclear emergencies. \u00a0Unfortunately the system is difficult to maintain because it has been obsolete for some time and replacement parts are difficult to find.<\/p>\n

Similarly, the US Treasury is using\u00a0a 56-year old computer system <\/a>for maintaining taxpayer records. \u00a0The Social Security Administration<\/a> uses a 30+ year old system for identifying benefits. \u00a0But ordinary businesses are also suffering from outdated technology.<\/p>\n

A report by Samanage<\/a> found that “Outdated technology is holding employees in the modern workforce back from driving process efficiency and identifying ways to make their work life better. One in four workers think their company\u2019s technology and policies hurt their work productivity (25.4 percent), with millennials as the largest group to believe the technology and policies at work impede productivity (30.9 percent). These technology issues are also leading employees to download and use unauthorized applications, which can cause headaches for IT managers, system problems and grave security threats.”<\/p>\n
