The application of Sarbanes Oxley to smaller companies has been delayed multiple times in order to provide more time for them to get their arms around exactly what it is all about and what they must do to comply.
\nBut now a recent report by Lord & Benoit<\/a> finds that the extra time hasn’t been used by the majority of the companies to prepare.<\/p>\n

\nThe L&B survey of 3321 public non-accelerated filer companies found that about half the companies responded inadequately. They found that:<\/p>\n

– 34 percent sent in their assessment at the last minute or submitted something incomplete
\n– 12 percent filed information showing that the companies were not in compliance
\n– 78 percent of those filing reported weaknesses from the “tone at the top\/ethics” and “competency\/training”
\n– 7 percent did not file a report<\/p>\n

Much of the problem is that small companies are not taking Sarbanes-Oxley seriously.<\/p>\n
