“Many Eyes”, a new web site created and hosted by scientists at IBM combines the YouTube-like idea of group sharing with data analysis and
\nvisualization. The site lets you upload data from spreadsheets and tables, and to create graphs, charts, treemaps and other visuals from the data, and then share your work with others.<\/p>\n

The Many Eyes site lets anyone spin the data up to be viewed in different ways. When different eyes view the same data, different perspectives are applied, and different patterns can be discovered. The tools are interactive and let you zoom in our out of the data. And once you create a visualization you like, you can embed it into a blog or web page.<\/p>\n

Ben Shneiderman, computer science professor at the University of Maryland and data visualization evangelist says<\/a> that “Many Eyes” help democratize data visualization. \u201cThe gift of the Internet is that everyone can participate, and the tools can be brought to a much wider audience,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Sometimes analyzing data is “like driving with your eyes closed,\u201d he said. \u201cWith visualization, it might be possible to open your eyes and see something that will help you\u201d \u2014 for instance, patterns, clusters, gaps or outliers in the data.<\/p>\n
