Can the as-a-service paradigm map to the health<\/a> care market? \u00a0Gartner seems to think so. \u00a0Gartner thinks that by 2020 40 percent of people will wear a portable health tracking device. \u00a0The future of health care<\/a> is virtual personal health assistants (VPHAs), smart devices, algorithms and analytics.\u00a0\u00a0Already wrist devices like Fitbit and Jawbone are able to\u00a0monitor simple health statistics.<\/p>\n

Consider a medical equipment manufacturer of a device that monitors the heart or other vital organ. The device captures data and beams it to the cloud where it is analyzed and monitored. \u00a0The manufacturer might also sell its device as a subscription complete with\u00a0maintenance and an on-line account for the wearer to review the device statistics and health recommendations.<\/p>\n

Laura Craft<\/a>, research director at Gartner, said that<\/a> “there is significant evidence that the majority of primary healthcare visits are of little value to the patient, and represent a massive drain on trained physician time. Physician demand is outpacing supply, begging the need for alternatives. Technology has advanced to the point where computers have become superior to the human mind; they are more accurate and consistent, and they are better at processing all the determinants of health and well-being than even the best of doctors.”<\/p>\n

MarketResearch.com estimates<\/a> that the Healthcare IoT market will reach $117 billion in sales by 2020 and is currently growing at a rate of 30 percent annually.<\/p>\n
