{"id":7045,"date":"2017-02-15T07:00:43","date_gmt":"2017-02-15T15:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/?p=7045"},"modified":"2017-01-16T17:44:10","modified_gmt":"2017-01-17T01:44:10","slug":"cyber-hacking-ransomware-hackers-hit-manufacturing-hard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/cyber-hacking-ransomware-hackers-hit-manufacturing-hard\/","title":{"rendered":"Cyber Hacking: Ransomware Hackers Hit Manufacturing Hard"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.fortinet.com\/2016\/06\/06\/move-over-healthcare-ransomware-has-manufacturing-in-its-sights\">report by Fortinet<\/a> found that over just the seven months between October 2015 and April 2016 that there were 8.63 million hacking attacks made against just 59 manufacturers that were surveyed.<\/p>\n<p>Not all of these attacks are ransomware, but the number of ransomware attacks in 2016 increased by more than 400 percent and manufacturing is the top target.<\/p>\n<p>Across industries, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.infosecurity-magazine.com\/news\/nonmalware-attacks-on-the-rise\/\">according to Carbon Black<\/a>, the ones seeing the most cases of ransomware are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Manufacturing &#8211; 16 percent<\/li>\n<li>Utility\/energy &#8211; 15.4 percent<\/li>\n<li>Technology companies &#8211; 12.6 percent<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/raymondkahre\">Raymond Kahre<\/a>, director of marketing and programs for Sword &amp; Shield Enterprise Security, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.acculube.com\/article\/manufacturing-top-target-for-ransomware\">said that<\/a> &#8220;manufacturing companies are considered high-value targets to intruders interested in intellectual property and other proprietary information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In particular, because manufacturing businesses haven\u2019t been heavily regulated like financial companies (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards and The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act) and healthcare (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), they\u2019ve had less incentive to invest in security.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/experts\/ralph-langner\/\">Ralph Langner<\/a>, co-founder of the Langner Group, <a href=\"http:\/\/advancedmanufacturing.org\/ready-for-ransomware\/\">said that<\/a> \u201cthe risk is getting bigger and bigger because of the tighter digital integration. Here\u2019s the problem: We are creating so many more cyber-physical interdependencies and at the same time we don\u2019t spend enough effort to actually understand those cyber-physical interdependencies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/kaseycross\">Kasey Cross<\/a>, director of product management at LightCyber, <a href=\"http:\/\/advancedmanufacturing.org\/ready-for-ransomware\/\">said that<\/a> \u201cin many ways, we are only seeing the tip of the iceberg in terms of the outcome of a network attack. Entire plants could be shut down or even ruined. Defects could be introduced to products that are not immediately discernible. A motivated attacker can get into any network today.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"lightsocial_container\"><div class=\"lightsocial_element\"><a class=\"lightsocial_a\" href=\"http:\/\/digg.com\/submit?url=https%3A%2F%2Fformtek.com%2Fblog%2Fcyber-hacking-ransomware-hackers-hit-manufacturing-hard%2F&amp;title=\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\"
