Complex database environments are making it difficult for database administrators to secure those networks. The Independent Oracle Users Group (IOUG) found that more than half of 316 DBAs they surveyed were managing more than 100 databases in their environment. And another 20 percent said that they are managing more than 500 databases.<\/p>\n

Just the sheer number of databases running on different boxes is making the task to lock down the environment difficult. 20 percent of the DBAs said that they expect that they will experience a data breach over the next year. The biggest threat is coming from insiders, rather than hackers and malicious code. 32 percent of the DBAs felt that their databases were only partially secure or were unaware of what they were doing in the area of data security. <\/p>\n

A big problem is the proliferation of “super users” that may easily gain access to sensitive information. 31 percent said that users could bypass application safeguards and gain direct database access to the data.<\/p>\n

Few companies have adopted database encryption, although many of the respondents said that it was being considered. Part of the reluctance is a worry that encryption will impact performance.<\/p>\n
