New standards are brewing for the wireless transmission of\u00a0data by Internet of Things (IoT)<\/a> devices.\u00a0Roughly 6.4 billion objects are online<\/a> and communicating with IT addresses. In 2013 networks transmitted 113.4 ZB and are expected to generate as much as 403 ZB of data per year by 2018. \u00a0That’s a lot of data\u00a0and today’s networks need to be redesigned to be able to support the\u00a0ever growing amount of data being transmitted.<\/p>\n

One standard, for example, called Weightless-P<\/a>, is designed to be reliable and provide carrier-grade security while consuming very little power.<\/p>\n

Derrick Wei<\/a>, CEO of M2COMM, said in a press release<\/a> that “Weightless-P is revolutionary; it will transform the LPWAN space by providing the very first clean slate open standard designed from the ground up for both public and private IoT deployments. From our experience in ultra-low-energy wireless networks, we are able to offer fully featured technology at a fraction of the complexity and energy consumption of cellular alternatives.”<\/p>\n

Wei said that<\/a> “Many IoT sectors require reliability to be addressed with ultra-low energy wireless communications not accessible through operator services today. The slow adoption of wireless IoT solutions highlights a huge technology void that Weightless-P will address without requiring custom hardware.”<\/p>\n

Besides Weightless-P, Verizon, AT&T and others are working to design networks specific<\/a> to the needs of IoT.<\/p>\n
