Reports find that users are increasingly worried about security and think that email encryption should be used more frequently, but the problem is that most people find email encryption too complicated and cumbersome to actually use.<\/p>\n

Osterman<\/a> found that 53 percent of North American organizations<\/a> think that email encryption is “very important” or “critical”.<\/p>\n

But\u00a0Jack Wallen<\/a>, writer at TechRepublic, said that<\/a> “email encryption is necessary; unfortunately, the encryption solutions aren’t user-friendly and foolproof enough for the masses.”<\/p>\n

Peter Firstbrook<\/a>, a research vice president at Gartner, questions how important it is to encrypt email. \u00a0The cost of email is about $10 to $20 per user annually to enable email encryptions. \u00a0Firstbrook said that<\/a>\u00a0“only about 10% of users actually need it and of that, only 1% of the traffic is truly sensitive data that needs to be encrypted.”<\/p>\n

Clifford Neuman<\/a>, director of the University of Southern California\u2019s Center for Computer Systems Security, agreed, saying that<\/a> \u201cyou are creating an environment where messages can get lost and become unrecoverable things. The vast majority of users \u2014 they are more concerned with the reliability of the service than these kinds of issues.\u201d<\/p>\n
