Another new report<\/a> is out that confirms once again that unstructured data is growing at an explosive pace. Companies are having a hard time trying to manage and contain that information. In the new report from IDC, called Enterprise Disk Storage Consumption Model, IDC predicts a compounded annual growth rate of 21.8% of normal transactional data and as much as a 61.7% compounded annual growth for structured data.<\/p>\n

The report goes on to say that “In the very near future, the management and organization of file-based information will become the primary task for many storage administrators in corporate datacenters. And this shift will have a significant impact on how companies assess storage solutions in terms of systems\u2019 performance, operational efficiency, and file services intelligence.”<\/p>\n

Cloud-based “Content Depots” like Google, Amazon, Flickr, and YouTube are expected to grow annually at a rate of 91.8% through 2012. IDC views Content Depots as a new market space that is not likely to replace Enterprise Storage systems. They see barriers to adoption by large corporations, especially when addressing enterprise requirements like eDiscovery, and networking limitations in terms of scalability and bandwidth. Other interesting issues around Cloud computing come up too such as European regulations that don’t allow you to store data about European customers outside of Europe — that can lead to issues when trying to redundantly store data across global data centers.<\/p>\n
