New tools are making the building and customization of apps easier. “Low code” development platforms<\/a> enabling ‘power users’ and ‘citizen developers<\/a>‘ to do more than ever with app customization and the building of basic apps from scratch.<\/p>\n

Twenty years ago Microsoft provided Visual Basic programming extensions<\/a> for applications like Word and Excel, and they popularized the idea of recording macros that could speed up often recurring tasks. \u00a0But now it is becoming very common for\u00a0software vendors to offer\u00a0tools for users to easily extend, combine and configure features and capabilities that create more targeted and customized applications.<\/p>\n

Eduardo Cruz<\/a>, wrote for AppDeveloper\u00a0that “today\u2019s low-code and no-code visual app development platforms have come a long way from the 1990s. Standards have matured, RESTful APIs are now abundant, and these no-code and low-code platforms are able to resolve many of the enterprise challenges the citizen developer faces as they seek to build and deploy applications in a secure, governed enterprise environment.”<\/p>\n
