The mobile market is poised to grow a little more strongly in 2017 compared to the fairly lackluster 2016. For example, Apple’s iPhone shipments declined 7 percent in 2016. \u00a0IDC is forecasting<\/a> shipments of smartphones to grow to 4.2 percent in 2017 from 2.5 percent in 2016 and then to plateau to about 4.4 percent during 2018. \u00a0Shipments this year are 1.53 billion units and that is expected to grow to 1.77 billion by 2021.<\/p>\n

While mobile applications for the enterprise are appealing, growth still has been relatively slow.<\/p>\n

Sabharinath Bala,<\/a> \u00a0IDC Senior Research Manager, said that<\/a> “the extension of the enterprise perimeter through mobile enterprise applications, device management, and the pull through for application development platforms and security drives a strong growth for enterprise mobility software and related services.\u00a0Although there are a few organisations that are advanced in their mobility journey with dedicated platforms and architectures for mobile to be a primary mode of usage, most mobile use cases are isolated, uncoordinated initiatives.”<\/p>\n
