\u00a0\"Adobe<\/td>\nYesterday Adobe<\/a> announced<\/a> the availability of version 8 of the Acrobat family of products.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n

In the first signs of integration with the MacroMedia line of products since acquiring<\/a> MacroMedia in 2005 for $3.4 Billion, Adobe has re-branded the FlashPlayer-based MacroMedia Breeze\u00a0product as Acrobat Connect.\u00a0 Connect is\u00a0a new addition to the Acrobat product line but\u00a0it is quite a bit different than the other Acrobat component products.<\/p>\n

Acrobat\u00a0Connect is a hosted web conferencing service similar to WebEx<\/a> or Microsoft’s NetMeeting<\/a>.\u00a0 Members are assigned permanent virtual meeting rooms with fixed\u00a0user-definable URLs, similar to phone numbers or email addresses.\u00a0 The service is billed monthly with unlimited usage for up to 15 participants.\u00a0 Functionality is similar to other web conferencing solutions, including screen sharing, white boarding, chat and video conferencing.\u00a0 The Connect Meeting room allows customized layout\u00a0with small windows of information\u00a0called “pods”.\u00a0 The Acrobat Connect service is free through the end of the year and $39\/month after that.\u00a0 There is also an SDK that would allow developers to create custom interactive applications based on Connect.<\/p>\n

Another new version 8 capability include the Acrobat 8 Professional<\/a> support for\u00a0true redaction.\u00a0 In earlier versions of Acrobat, text could be redacted by hiding the text with layered markups, but the text was still in the file and could even be searched.<\/p>\n

Acrobat 8 introduces a redaction toolbar with a “Search & Redact” capability.\u00a0 Redactions are displayed\u00a0using color-codes that you select based\u00a0based on the type of redaction being made.\u00a0 Redacted text is totally removed from the document.\u00a0 Within the context of document management, the feature is great — a frequently asked for capability, but you’ll need to remember to keep the original document archived using a different set of access control privileges.<\/p>\n
