Businesses worry that\u00a0in an e-discovery inquiry that they will not be able to produce the requested information in a timely fashion. \u00a0According to a recent report by Osterman Research<\/a> that 60 percent of managers are worried about retrieving information that might be requested in an e-discovery inquiry. \u00a040 percent anticipate that the number of e-discovery request that they will need to respond to will increase over the next 12 months.<\/p>\n

Part of the challenge with e-discovery is that the amount of data that is subject to requests is growing very rapidly. \u00a0E-discovery requests can apply now to not only paper documents, but also all electronic office documents, email, text messages, social media posts, and even Internet of Things data. \u00a0Business data is growing at an annual rate of about 18 percent.<\/p>\n

The Osterman report found, for example, that most organizations are able to deal with e-discovery requests for email within a window of the last six months. \u00a0But the ability to find information in emails past six months\u00a0is poor. \u00a0Many organization do not preserve email information longer than that period.<\/p>\n

Michael Osterman<\/a>, Principal Analyst and Founder, Osterman Research, said that<\/a> “there is a lot at stake for firms that are not ready to respond quickly and appropriately to e-discovery requests… Business and IT leaders would be well-advised to immediately take a proactive approach to their e-discovery readiness and, in doing so, enable their firm to stay competitive, avoid the consequences of non-compliance, and earn the trust and loyalty of clients.”<\/p>\n
