IDC identifies the following three IoT applications as areas that will see some of the largest spending by businesses: freight monitoring, manufacturing operations, and connected vehicles.

Chris Gray, director of IoT for Red Hat, said that “today, you don’t have to look any farther than a company like Uber to see how technology and connected devices are really helping to transform businesses from a static product to a true service-oriented economy. Leveraging open source provides organizations the level of innovation, integration, and interoperability required to make that transformation a reality.”

Jamie Horrell, IDC Research Manager, said that “IoT will be an open ecosystem of horizontally specialised players, bringing their own best of breed technology to the table. Open standards are critical to interoperability and it would be a bold move to rely on proprietary standards or vertically integrated players to deliver operational transformation… IoT is not about driving IT efficiency but rather operational efficiency. Applications like supply chain are obvious targets for this.”

Simon Bridges, Minister of New Zealand Communications, <a major sectors of the economy, assist in monitoring our health, make transport and logistics more efficient, help reduce energy consumption and tackle environmental issues.”

<div
