The good news for internet users in 2016 was that the total number of targeted cyber attacks against them was down 21 percent from the previous year, based on a study from Kaspersky Lab<\/a>. \u00a0That’s 4.3 million attacks, down from 5.5 million.<\/p>\n

The bad news is that the number of attacks against corporations jumped significantly. \u00a0Most likely the perpetrators of attacks have found that corporate victims are far more lucrative targets. \u00a0The number of corporate attacks in 2016 was 690,000, a 28.4 percent increase.<\/p>\n

Alexander Liskin<\/a>, security expert at Kaspersky Lab, said that<\/a> “Apparently, criminals consider these users valuable targets and are willing to invest into attacking them with exploits. This could be the reason for an increased amount of attacked corporate users.”<\/p>\n

Businesses are aware that they’ve become the target of cyber security attacks and are\u00a0investing. The Kaspersky Lab report estimates that the IT line item towards security spending by businesses will grow 14 percent in 2017. \u00a0Businesses are aware that the complexity of their IT infrastructure is a key factor in investing more dollars into security. The range of spending towards security is wide: annual spending of only $1000 per year by very small businesses to more than $1 million per year by larger companies.<\/p>\n
