Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being applied to\u00a0enable two-way interactions between humans and computers.<\/p>\n

Natural Language Processing (NLP)<\/a> is the ability of computers to parse and interpret\u00a0human speech and writing in order determine what question or directive a human is posing. \u00a0Natural Language Generation (NLG)<\/a> is the reverse; computers describe results, findings and insights to humans using natural language, either by speech or text. \u00a0A combination of NLP and NLG enables some level of conversation to happen between computers and humans.<\/p>\n

NLP and NLG technologies are now what is powering the creation of bots.<\/p>\n

Matt Gould<\/a>, CSO & Co-Founder of Arria NLG, said that<\/a> “right now we\u2019re still playing question and answer with chatbots. But there\u2019s still another level until the Internet can communicate with you naturally, until it can come back with a more general inference about the intent behind your question, and NLG is the solution that embodies the required expertise. To understand, conversely, is to be able to infer something from information received\u2013 analyzing and extracting insights from diverse data sets.”<\/p>\n

NLG is getting better. NLG is expected to be integrated into a most discovery software and generate more than 20 percent of business content by 2018, according to Gartner.<\/a><\/p>\n

Kasey Panetta<\/a>, analyst at Gartner, said that\u00a0\u201cNLG will enable next-generation BI and analytics platforms to automatically find, visualize and narrate important findings. The technology will expand analytics to a broad audience as well as reduce time and cost for regular batch reports.”<\/p>\n
