IT is a department that is useful only to the extent that it supports the operations of other departments in the company. IT provides services and support for business projects in the organization. \u00a0Increasingly though, IT is viewed as an impediment to getting things done.<\/p>\n

David Caldwell<\/a>, senior IT solutions consultant at Kaiser Permanente, said that<\/a> “IT is in jeopardy because of the agreements or promises they’ve made to the business. You can’t deliver on time, you can’t deliver what you promised and you can’t deliver reliable systems.”<\/p>\n

Greg Arnette<\/a>, CTO at Sonian, said that <\/a>“IT brought the wave of innovation in, [and yet,] IT is under the same assault of things they were the perpetrators of.\u00a0IT is going through a metamorphosis that reduces the need to have as many in IT as in previous history.”<\/p>\n

But IT departments need not be doomed. To remain relevant IT needs to take on an advisory role to help the organization wisely navigate the many possible technology options.<\/p>\n

Jim Fowler<\/a>, CIO at GE, said that<\/a> “for years, we’ve been hearing that process should drive technology and technology should never drive process. I don’t believe that’s true anymore. Technology is becoming the process. In a world of automation, where machines are telling people what to do more than people are telling machines what to do, the person who’s been doing this for all these years should be the one to explain how the work gets done. We should have the credibility and the influence to step up and show people there’s a better way.”<\/p>\n
