Gartner defines a digital ecosystem<\/a> as “an interdependent group of enterprises, people and\/or things that share standardized digital platforms for a mutually beneficial purpose (such as commercial gain, innovation or common interest). Digital ecosystems enable you to interact with customers, partners, adjacent industries \u2014 even your competition.”<\/p>\n

Jenny Beresford<\/a>, research director at Gartner, said that<\/a> “digitalization in most enterprises is maturing, and as it does it becomes much more likely that these enterprises will become part of a digital ecosystem where competitors, customers, regulators, other stakeholders and other enterprises exchange information and interact electronically in converged physical and virtual scenarios.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gartner research found that 79 percent of top-performing organizations participate in a digital ecosystem, while among mid-performing businesses, only 49 percent do.<\/p>\n

Government, in particular, is lagging in their digitalization efforts. Gartner found that compared to top-performing private sector companies that spend upwards of 33 percent of IT budgets on digitalization, governments are more focused on keeping their existing systems running, spending only 22 percent of their budgets on digitalization.<\/p>\n

Rick Howard<\/a>, research vice president at Gartner, said that<\/a> “as digitalization gains momentum across all industries, the need for government to join digital ecosystems \u2013 interdependent, scalable networks of enterprises, people and things \u2013 also increases. The digital ecosystem becomes the means by which government can truly become more effective and efficient in the delivery of public services.”<\/p>\n
