The benefits of cloud computing have driven a huge migration of computing from on-premise systems to systems running in the cloud. \u00a0The migration has been a bonanza\u00a0as the largest cloud vendors snap up this business. \u00a0To support the rapid growth of the cloud, cloud vendors are investing massive amounts of money on building out infrastructure.<\/p>\n

In May, for example, Microsoft said that<\/a> they’re spending about $1 billion every month on new infrastructure to enable cloud computing for enterprise and highly regulated organizations like the federal government. To meet demand, Microsoft is opening, on average, one new data center every month.<\/p>\n

Tom Keane<\/a>, Azure General Manager, said that<\/a> \u201cwe\u2019re entering a wave where the pickup and the adoption is incredible. It\u2019s where these investments in infrastructure, connectivity, compliance, two-way partnerships between government and industry\u2026 is coming together to allow us to put real mission data in the cloud.”<\/p>\n

Scott Kessler<\/a>, deputy global director for equity research at S&P Global Market Intelligence, said that<\/a> “there\u2019s tremendous demand\u00a0and very few companies besides market-leading Amazon, Microsoft or Google with the pockets and the expertise to handle the huge outlays of capital and talent required… They\u2019re seizing upon what is really an opportunity that\u2019s unique to the biggest and best-capitalized players.”<\/p>\n
