Perhaps part publicity stunt and part visionary pioneering, Hewlett Packard Enterprise \u00a0(HPE) recently showcased a server built with hardware that specifically targets\u00a0Big Data.<\/p>\n

It’s more than just a server prototype. \u00a0HPE is calling it “The Machine” and has\u00a0equipped \u00a0it with 160 TB of memory spread across 40 nodes. \u00a0HPE CEO Meg Whitman<\/a>, said that <\/a>“the secrets to the next great scientific breakthrough, industry-changing innovation, or life-altering technology hide in plain sight behind the mountains of data we create every day. We can\u2019t rely on the technologies of the past. We need a computer built for the Big Data era.”<\/p>\n

Kirk Bresniker<\/a>, chief architect of The Machine and a research fellow at HPE, said that “it\u2019s an order of magnitude bigger than anyone else has done \u2026 no one\u2019s ever built a unified memory subsystem at this capacity before. ”<\/p>\n

The Machine was built with a focus on speed. \u00a0It uses light waves to transmit data instead of standard electrical data. \u00a0The use of light is expected to dramatically boost computing speeds.<\/p>\n

Mark Potter<\/a>, CTO at HPE, said that <\/a>“we believe Memory-Driven Computing is the solution to move the technology industry forward in a way that can enable advancements across all aspects of society.”<\/p>\n
